I was very tempted when I saw on Aliexpress U87 microphones for £12 and £25 -what a deal! Yet, they were cardioid only, but they must be great, right? No - wrong/ I got two U87 look-a-likes and a weird looking cardioid, and all three really were junk. Fair enough, the weird one is probably fixable, but while one of the U87 clones has an acceptable tone, even the shock mount won't prevent every cable rub or floor vibration getting through - plus it hums a little. The other one just goes hiss, with a bit of thin audio. I've alsoexplained a bit about how these things get made - as in the chassis, the capsule mounting and the PCB - all sourced from different local sources and simply soldered up and screwed together. For £12, I should have guessed!
