The Joys of Botanical Painting ~ Watercolor Floral Festival! 🥳🌸

Hello! Happy Weekend! Let’s Paint! Today we have 8 new varieties of wildflower to bask in! These are so beautiful & have been such a happy & chance happening this Summer! {Next year, fingers crossed, we will have tulips & peonies & hollyhocks & dahlias & bearded irises to paint after we plant them in fall, so this is a really good warm up to that as well!} A couple of watercolor tips.. . 1. Use a brush proportional to the task you need it for ~ for example, there may be too much water & paint on your brush to do your painting justice so scale down to a smaller brush, or you may not be able to get enough water & paint to load onto your brush, in which case, scale up in size I love Escoda Reserva brushes, also Winsor & Newton Series 7 brushes are always recommended by botanical artists 2. If your painting dries too pale, that’s absolutely fine & totally normal! It’s called the first wash. Let it dry completely & then start glazing {or adding consequent layers} over the top. You’ll find that {depending on what you’re painting of course} you will have to add paint to less areas of the painting each time.. . Keep some of the softer more pale area visible for highlights & for general visual delight 3. Simplify complex shapes ~ Start by seeing if there are simple shapes like circles, squares or triangles, then build them from there.. . Where does one curve end & another begin, is it halfway around the petal or from the base? Etc 4. Paint to enjoy the painting process.. . Don’t get too bogged down in making the color mix match the subject exactly, but allow what the painting needs to be a priority.. . Often when you’re creating a visual world on the canvas or paper, the colors may need to be adjusted to showcase the splendor of the subject that you can see & feel when you’re looking at the real thing.. . Feel free to enhance anything you like, I often make the colors brighter or softer depending.. . {Of course if you’re strictly doing botanical illustration your colors may need to be more rigorously correct} 5. If it’s feeling too hard, take a break, come back tomorrow, or paint something different.. . Make some swatches, mix some paint, make loose sketches with wild colors, sometimes I’ll use gold ink or a Flourescent pencil to sketch etc I hope this is helpful! Let me know if there’s anything particular you’d like to know more about Have a wonderful weekend! 🥳🤗🌸💞🌷🦩🐩🎪🎨🪷🦄
