Hooked on Discovery with Justin Ogilvie

The start of the year is a perfect time to make plans, consider where we want our creativity to take us, and where we want to take our creativity. To help awaken our wonder, we're launching a new featured artist initiative with painter, educator, and Canvas Method co-founder Justin Ogilvie. We'll be giving him a budget for experimentation, and over the next few weeks, checking in to see how he's progressing. In today's episode, we'll dive into Justin's practice and perspectives on how to set goals for his art practice and achieve growth through the exploration of new art materials. - - About our theme of "Creative Exploration" With the dawn of a new year, it’s a perfect time to take a moment in life to pause; to listen to what is happening in the outside world, so that we can reimagine, reset, and become more in rhythm with life. A moment to look at our place in the world – what do I want to do? How can I create with impact? How do we bring focus to what is important? What do we want to make of 2024? Take the time to consider these questions, to make our plans, and to make time to consider where we want our creativity to take us and where we want to take our creativity. Last year, we found success with “I Wonder...”. Connecting with artists like Paige Bowman, who encouraged us to play, let loose of self-criticism, and enjoy the experimental phase; Celan Bouillet on setting goals for the year, finding your community, and venturing into the unknown; and Cody Lecoy on creating work with impact that connects us all. This year, we build on that foundation. Inviting “wonder” is a means to being open to exploration and discovery; it’s an opportunity to play with ideas and explore the things you’re curious about — from incorporating new techniques or materials to leaping into the unknown territory of a new medium, considering the genre of work you’ve been creating in or exploring the idea of participating in an art class or applying to be part of a juried show. Every angle of exploration you take will yield new information to lead to the next experiment or possibly even to the next “big thing” you want to pursue to progress your art practice.
