Dale Ellis: BAD decisions could have taken the NBA career AND LIFE of this Supersonics great | FPP

After a great career at the University of Tennessee, he came to the NBA primed to be a star, but instead he would get drafted to one of the worst situations possible as he would stuck behind the great Dallas Mavericks Duo of Rolando Blackman and Mark Aguirre for his first three years in the league. He would finally get a trade to Seattle and go on to become one of the best scorers in the NBA and form a lethal trio for half of his time with the Supersonics along with Tom Chambers and Xavier McDaniel. The Sonics would make an improbably western conference finals run in 1987, behind NBA most improved player, Dale Ellis; but they’d never be able to replicate that success and Ellis is partly to blame for that. Not for his lack of contribution on the court, but instead the distractions he caused off of it as he found himself in some pretty serious situations which easily could have ended his career and maybe even his life. He overstayed his welcome and after a fight with Xavier McDaniel, he was shipped to Milwaukee, but this trade out of Seattle may have been exactly what was needed to save his career as he went on to have successful stints with the Bucks, then two years with David Robinson and the San Antonio Spurs where Ellis would become the first player in NBA history to make 1000 threes. He would have some great years on the Denver Nuggets where he would play a crucial veteran role and shooting role on their 1995 playoff team led by Dikembe Mutombo and Mahmoud Abdul Rauf; he would find himself traded back to the Seattle prior to ’98 where he would be reunited with former teammates Detlef Schrempf and Gary Payton, then after two years in Seattle, he finished his last NBA season as a Charlotte Hornet in 2000. His career could have easily gone sideways, but he cleaned it up right when he needed to and ended up going down as one of the greatest shooters the league has ever seen, and that’s why today’s episode is on Dale Ellis. https://www.basketball-reference.com/...
