Guests traveling with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) had the unique opportunity to hear how a master Japanese craftsmen creates Hakone Yosegi Zaiku, which is a technique that uses various types of woods to create intricate designs made from wood around the world. Hakone-Yosegi-Zaiku is based on a pattern made by combining pieces of wood with various colors and textures. This is called "Taneita". It takes several years of experience to learn the skills necessary to make the pieces of wood which are formed at angles and fitted together. The intricate designs must be carefully fitted to maintain the accuracy of the dimensions. The pieces of wood are then carefully glued together. Wood from the Hakone mountain range use to primarily be the source for the craft until the nearby mountains were declared to be a national park and they are no longer allowed to cut down a large number of trees. Now, craftsmen search and purchase high-quality wood from various regions in Japan which is a mountainous country that is more than 70% covered by forests. Unique wood from other countries that has attractive colors or textures is also sometimes used. Each type of wood has a different color and grain. The species of wood used in each craft or project is selected based on the different characteristics of that specific wood. I highly recommend visiting one of these master craftsmen when in Japan! You will not want to leave a store without making a purchase!
