In 484 BCE, the King of Yue, Goujian (越王勾踐), scoured his land to find the best swordsman to instruct his army in the art of swordfighting. He did not expect that the instructor would be a woman. The Maiden of Yue, or Yuenü (越女), might be the first swordswoman to be recorded in history. But did she really exist? Let’s look at some arguments for and against it. I took some creative liberties with my word choices when I translated the principle of her techniques, to fit the context of the passage. You can find the original passage of her describing the principles of the Sword of the Yue Maiden here: https://ctext.org/dictionary.pl?if=en... 🎶MUSIC by Epidemic Sound: http://www.epidemicsound.com 🎉SUPPORT US ON🎉 Decide future contents and other rewards on Patreon: / coolhistorybros One time donations on Kofi: https://ko-fi.com/cjleung 🎥PLAYLISTS🎥 Cool Chinese History (By release) • Cool Chinese History Qin Dynasty Origin • Qin Dynasty Origin Hundred Schools of Thoughts: • Hundred Schools of Thought 📚SOURCES: Zhao Ye (趙曄), Spring & Autumn Annals of Wu & Yue (吳越春秋) Sima Qian (司馬遷), Shiji (史記) Paul A Cohen, History and Popular Memory: The Power of Story in Moments of Crisis Paul A Cohen, Speaking to History: The Story of King Goujian in Twentieth-Century China Robert Chu, Rene Ritchie, Y.
