How to Shift a Date plant from one place to another

They are easy to transplant because their roots grow in a tight, fibrous mat close to the trunk. 1 Remove the lower palm fronds before transplanting. Cut these off as close to trunk as possible, leaving only the top two or three fronds. This is important to reduce water loss during the recovery period after transplanting. 2 Tie the remaining upper fronds into a bundle so they are out of the way for digging around the trunk. 3 Cut into the soil about 12 inches from the trunk of the date palm to sever the outer roots of the tree. Continue cutting through the roots in a circle around the tree. 4 Dig a trench on the outside edge of the circle of cut roots to a depth of about 12 inches. 5 Dig into the soil at the bottom of the trench at a 45 degree angle toward the base of the trunk and pry up gently on the root ball. Continue prying on all sides of the tree until the root ball comes free from the soil. 6 Angle the trunk down to one side so the root ball is angled up on the other side and slide a burlap sheet under the roots. Angle the tree back the other way to bring the roots fully onto the burlap sheet. 7 Lift the tree from the hole by the four corners of the burlap sheet and carry or drag it to the new planting site. 8 Dig a hole twice the diameter and the same depth of the root ball. Lower the palm into the hole and slide the burlap sheet out. 9 Refill the hole around the roots of the date palm, carefully packing soil around the exposed roots to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly and untie the fronds. 10 Fertilize the transplanted palm with a slow release, low-nitrogen fertilizer, such as one labeled 8-2-12-4Mg, which is 8 percent nitrogen, 2 percent phosphorus, 12 percent potassium and 4 percent magnesium. This is very effective in stimulating root regeneration in transplanted palms. Apply at the low end of the recommended rates on the package. Things You Will Need Shovel Burlap sheet Bypass loppers Pruning saw Heavy duty garden twine or rope Tips Transplant date palms during the growing season for best results. Spring is an ideal time because the roots will have the rest of the year to regenerate before ceasing growth in late fall. Water the palm deeply before transplanting so the soil sticks to the roots better. Transplant the date palm to an appropriate location. They need full sun and good drainage. Avoid planting in heavy clay or where water collects after a rain. For fruit production, date palms should receive a minimum of 10 hours of sun each day. Date palms over 8 feet tall are difficult to transplant without the use of heavy machinery and specialized tools.
