Nobby the Aardvark Longplay (C64) [50 FPS]

Developed by Genesis Software and published by Thalamus in 1992. Follow me on Twitter:   / al82_retro   Add me on Google+: http://bit.ly/1tPwL1u This is another game that I was aware of but never owned back on my real C64; a demo was included on the the power pack on the last edition of Commodore Format that I ever bought and I'm not sure if it was even playable. The game is based on a cartoon character that appeared in several cartoons produced by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises and I remember seeing them featured as part of the Pink Panther Show cartoons, although the character was never actually called "Nobby". It's not clear whether Genesis Software simply ripped off the character for the game, or whether it's an officially licensed game using the character. As for the game itself, Zzap64 gave this a review score of 96%, which is far too generous in my opinion; either the review staff had been starved of quality games (not impossible since the C64 was well over-the-hill by 1992) or Thalamus paid them off for a positive review although it's irrelevant to worry about that now. The game features Nobby going on a quest to find the fabled land of "Antopia" where he can gorge his guts on ants. To get there, he must progress through 7 (very short, it has to be said) different stages, which vary in style; some stages are straightforward platforming levels, whilst others see Nobby piloting various vehicles and there is even a top-down maze section. This lack of continuity is one of the things that irritated me about this game as it didn't seem to be able to make it's mind up as to what sort of game the developers wanted it to be. The game includes some nice touches, such as the way Nobby has to suck ants out of the ant hills on the first stage to use as ammo to shoot baddies. Unfortunately, this concept is present only on the first level and doesn't reappear for the rest of the game; understandable in a way since it's unlikly that the Lost City of Atlantis would have an infestation of ants, even if it did exist. This game borrows heavily from Genesis' previous "CJ" titles, which they were also responsible for developing, although I think CJ's Elephant Antics was the better game. Nobby fires ants out of his mouth in the same way that CJ fired peanuts from his trunk and moves around in similar fashion. Talking of "borrowing", some of the music during the hot-air balloon stage sounds remarkably similar to that used in James Pond 2: Robocod. The graphics are nicely drawn and the animated intro and ending sequences are particularly nice. However, Nobby is coloured blue on the the games's box cover, title screen and intro, yet grey in the actual game? I'd guess that the developers couldn't use blue for the main sprite as Nobby would disappear when shown next to blue objects, such as the sky on stage 1; it's quite jarring to see the colour change being so obvious. As for the gameplay, it's fairly standard platforming stuff and it's not terrible by any means, but there are enough niggles to detract from the enjoyment. The play-field is too small, so you'll get hit by enemies popping into existence at the sides of the screen whilst enemy projectiles fly across the screen at the most awkward of positions. The space level punishes you with inescapable lava traps that will kill you if you take the wrong turn, which is incredibly annoying and one of my pet hates in games of this sort. In conclusion, this is a mediocre platform game that fails to live up to the benchmark set by Apex Productions's "Creatures" games, which it looks like it's trying to emulate and is not even as good as Genesis' previous titles. Enjoy! #retrogaming
