One of the darkest animated movies for children is also one of the best. Based on Richard Adams' successful novel about rabbits, the 1978 film adaptation of Watership Down is a memorable and now widely hailed movie. Can an animated movie about rabbits be that great? I review and analyze Watership Down, providing context -- such as rabbits in animation and the trend of darker kids' movies in the late 1970s. Turns out that Watership Down features mythology, tribalism, existential crises, the threat of death, and the question of property rights and migration.
