Brenda Lee - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me with CC Lyrics

Activate closed captions to see the lyrics on screen. Performance from 1987 or 1988. This song was a mega hit for Dusty Springfield in 1966 ( #1 in the UK and #4 in the US). Brenda Lee covered it the same year on her "Coming On Strong" album. It is an Italian song "Io che non vivo (senza te)" - "I cannot live (without you)". Springfield heard it performed at the San Remo song contest by Pino Donaggio and Jody Miller. She had English lyrics written for her recording. In 1970, Elvis Presley's version reached #11 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the AC chart. Music by Pino Donaggio with lyrics by Vito Pallavicini English lyrics by Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell. Lyrics as sung by Brenda Lee: When I said I needed you, you said you would always stay It wasn't me who changed but you, and now you've gone away Don't you know that now you've gone, I'm left here on my own and I have to follow you and beg you to come home You don't have to say you love me, just be close at hand You don't have to stay forever, I will understand Believe me, believe me, I can't help but love you But believe me, I'll never tie you down Live alone with just a memory, my life is dead and so unreal There's nothing left for me, there's nothing left for me ¹ You don't have to say you love me, just be close at hand You don't have to stay forever, I will understand Believe me, believe me, Ooooh, You don't have to say you love me, just be close at hand You don't have to stay forever, I will understand Believe me, believe me, believe me ¹The original line here is "All that's left is loneliness, there's nothing left to feel" Please excuse the blurry video, but I thought the vocal performance was worth posting. Video is from 1987 or 1988. Song history: Madeline Bell, one of Dusty's backup singers, recalled that Dusty kept it under wraps. No one could hear it until the English lyrics were done. Dusty gave to a trusted friend, Vicki Wickham to do the lyrics. With Dusty's approval, Wickam partnered with her friend Simon Napier-Bell on the assignment. Napier-Bell later became Springfield's manager. The lyrics are not a translation of the original Italian.
