Knowing how the structured independence of sober living homes fits one’s life is essential. Sober living programs provide transitional homes for guided independent living. But, high-quality sober living homes are still supervised, i.e., the best ones will be set up with accountability, a supportive environment, community, and purpose leading to stable housing. What is that mean? This means there are house rules and schedules in the life of sober living house residents, such as you are in bed by 8 o’clock, your bed’s made, attending house meetings, the chore is done, and your home is immaculate, etc. The follow-up requirement is that everyone in a home has a purpose. For instance, kids have the purpose of going to school; parents have the purpose of going to work. So it can be doing an IOP or a PHP, or you’re volunteering, or anything meant for utilizing your precious time instead of just sitting in the house all day that isn’t conducive to a sober environment. Sober living homes demands that individual stay sober and clean. There is zero tolerance for drug abuse or even alcohol abuse. How to incorporate all this? Most sober living homes are 12 steps based and require that there are formal treatment services and recovery housing. In this, you are trying to learn how to live life differently, which requires changing your thinking and how you do things. Take drastic measures to change your thinking. Interestingly, 95% of our thoughts are subconscious, and 95% of our thoughts today are the same as yesterday. As per sober living, your best thinking got you what you are today. Suppose you want to learn how to live a different kind of life. Then changing your thoughts and ways of doing things, joining the recovery program, and doing the work can be the best way to get there. Even if you don’t want to, a sober living home will push you to do things differently. Many times when things are thrown our way, we are triggered. The path of least resistance is to resume doing what we were doing. Our self-conscious feelings lead us back to the path of least resistance for early recovery.
