The Hayduke Trail is an 850 mile hike across Utah, and in this section of it we will be traversing above and below the rim in Bryce Canyon National Park! From the town of Tropic, hiking all the way across the park, and then south towards Page and Kanab. I have never been to Bryce before so I am super stoked on this section! Maybe not so much getting caught in more snow storms though... We took the Under the Rim Trail down below the trees for spectacular views looking up at the hoodoos from a different angle! We only saw one other hiker while under the rim, which was a funny contrast compared to the hundreds and thousands of people we saw near Navajo Loop Trail, and the more popular hikes within the park. It was some nice solitude with some fun hiking. The under the rim trail took us all the way back up to higher elevations at Rainbow Point, which in my opinion is the best view in Bryce Canyon. A sweeping vista overlooking the hoodoos from above, where you can see the rim and amphitheater stretch into the distance. Heading back down below the rim, we dropped off at Yovimpa Pass, and left the park! This hike across bryce canyon took us two days, and for both nights we camped outside of park boundaries. The national park has a funny shape which allows such a thing quite easily. Many of the trails are a stones throw away from Dixie National Forest. So in the end no permits were needed to do this which was nice. Unfortunately for this entire section we had terrible weather, getting snowed on two days in a row! It was much colder than expected, but hey bryce is at a pretty high elevation upwards of 9,000ft so I should have known better. Rain in the forecast really meant snow. I think it made for a really interesting time backpacking, and made for some special views with the moody clouds, and fresh dusting of snow on all of the hoodoos which bryce canyon is so well known for.
