Ukip's Carswell makes awkward Commons return

Newly elected Ukip MP Douglas Carswell, who defected to the party from the Conservatives, received a frosty welcome on his return to the Commons on Monday. An awkward silence from both sides of the house ensued as Carswell, flanked by former colleagues Zac Goldsmith and Sir Peter Tapsell, made his way between the benches towards the Table of the House to be sworn in at the despatch box. The silence was only broken when, as Carswell prepared to take his Oath of Allegiance, laughter erupted in the room. After swearing an oath on the bible Mr Carswell told John Bercow, the Speaker of the House: "It's good to be back." Meanwhile, Nigel Farage, who was in the Commons for the first time in more than 30 years, hailed it an "emotional" moment for Ukip. Before being sworn in, Mr Carswell told journalists he was "delighted" that Mr Farage would be there.
