i re-post this every couple of years for Armistice Day, as a tribute to my grandfather and others that served.... he was a musician, a violinist and during WW1 at Ypres, he was gassed and had his hand crushed by a rolling artillery shell...he died when i was two, so i didn't really know him.... for those like me who have never known war, it is an unimaginable horror. vocals, trumpet, guitar: m.h. lyrics: i gave you lots of time to open your heart let its warm rhythms pour from the wound i loved your courage and your foolish bravery and i wept at this greedy world as all our plans were ruined you travelled the damage, your satchel full of innocence in step with the many eager fools that shone in the glow of your tragedy buried in the mire i reached for your hand but it was gone slowly each day with its sunrise each evening soothes through the tears kind words flicker so grainy as they fade dreams buried memories through the years your fists never clenched with a passion the scars and fog starved your mind our time spent in silence, was there a choice fear and your flag made you blind strains of incomprehension echo a chorus of rank and certain power those fists and salutes .. misjudged childhood trembling finger points to crumbling tower we had time to open our hearts let its warm rhythms pour to the ground with courage and bravery can we weep with love's forgiving sound
