Apparently, Pins Mechanical Co. is one of the larger "arcade bar" chains in the United States, and in addition to focusing on retro game titles, the "pins" in the name also refers to their two other major ingredients for fun; pinball machines, and bowling alley pins. This was my first experience with any of their locations, as they're mostly based in the Midwest, with the majority of their spots currently in Ohio. This was at the end of a long day spent in the car with the whole family on a roadtrip from New Jersey to Charlotte, and we arrived there just about 20 minutes before 9 PM. That unfortunately tempered my experience, because while they are a family-friendly location throughout the day, at 9 PM they have a cutoff for anyone under the age of 21. Needless to say, we didn't get to do a lot before having to head out. It's a shame, because they definitely have a great mix of games. All the pinball machines are $1 apiece (well, most of them -- I think The Getaway was actually set to 50¢ a play, but it still said $1 on the machine), and there's a decent mix of older titles and brand new machines. For the older titles, World Cup Soccer, Attack From Mars, and the Data East version of Star Wars were a few of my favorites. Newer stuff skewed heavily towards the latest Sterns, but Pulp Fiction, Galactic Tank Force, Toy Story 4, Guns N' Roses, and Hot Wheels all were also out there on the floor. Unfortunately, a good chunk of the machines out there either were turned off, had coin mech issues, or just played straight up bad. Maybe I was grumpy from the drive, but it wasn't a great first impression. Meanwhile, the retro game portion of the arcade? I can't help but be impressed. Keep in mind this place does not have any cover charge; that's why I'm shocked that all the old arcade games were on free play. You could literally walk in off the street, play any of their dozens of classic arcade games, and not spend a single cent. Even more admirable? They've gone on record as saying that any coins put in their machines will go towards Ronald McDonald House Charities. With a great selection of classics including titles like Q*Bert, the original Donkey Kong trilogy, X-Men, Super Off Road, Robotron 2084, and of course Ms. Pac-Man, there's a lot of stuff to play here. Hopefully the next time I find myself in town (or at another Pins location), we'll get a little bit longer to spend here before being sent our marching orders. Also, one more word of advice; they are a bar, but they do not have a full-service kitchen. They do, however, have a number of different food trucks outside in the parking lot, and additionally, there's a lot of different choices nearby for food. I'm going to go ahead and recommend Bang Bang Burgers which was right next door; the burgers were absolutely delicious and massive and 100% hit the spot after a long day of driving.
