Bhutan Climate Action Conclave 2022

Today, the earth is facing a triple planetary crisis – climate disruption, accelerated loss of biodiversity, and the mounting pressure of wastes and pollution, posing an existential threat. Increasing cases of floods, drought, forest fire, and emergence of new diseases have now become all too familiar. Amidst the reeling impact of COVID 19 pandemic, that affected more than 603.7 million people and claimed more than 6.4 million lives and upending the livelihoods of millions, we are a witness to the devastating floods in Pakistan, and the heatwave in China that is causing widespread drought leading to the drying up of some rivers - not to forget our own recent extreme weather events and calamities that claimed the lives and livelihoods in various parts of the country. It is already established that climate change is happening at an alarming pace in the Himalayas as evident in the recent devastating avalanches and flash floods. Rapid retreat of glaciers, extreme weather events, erratic and unpredictable weather, strange rainfall patterns, and rising temperatures are endangering a very fragile ecosystem on the ‘third pole’ and remaining ‘water tower’ of the world. Aside from their impacts on biodiversity and species persistence, the consequences of such changes are threatening food, water, and energy security particularly, of the most vulnerable mountain communities and the sustainability of their timeless way of life. Against this backdrop, Bhutan has shown the leadership in its commitment to remain carbon–neutral country for all times to come. Bhutan Climate Action Conclave 2022 raised greater awareness of the climate change impacts to the people living in the highlands of mountain ecosystem and called for greater support by the developing countries while highlighting the role of the non-state actors. Themed “For mountains, glaciers and people”, the Bhutan Climate Action Conclave 2022 was held on 18th October 2022 at the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment Research in Bumthang, marking the end of the first edition of the Snowman Race which took place from 13th October to 17th October.
