The Rapha Festive 500 Roundel | What it means to a cyclist

I got my Festive 500 Roundel from #Rapha in the post the other day. It’s always a nice physical reminder of the effort that I put in over that 8 day period all those months ago. I’ve done the #festive500 every year since 2014, most of them fixed, some of them with friends, most of them alone, and one year I even did it in less than 60 hours. Each year I have a slightly different focus for completing the challenge. The two main themes running through my festive500 in 2018 were my twisted ankle, and my father. The ankle because it threatened to derail my attempt and severely hampered my preparation. The visit to see my father in Montville was a challenge on a much deeper personal and psychological level. The roads I covered to visit him on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland were the same roads we used to ride together when he was in much better shape. I’m really grateful I had this opportunity to spend time with him. In 2018 I did it on a new old bike, a Trek 5500 OCLV with SRAM 1x. Thanks to Matt at Gear for putting it together. It’s the same frame I used to race in the 90’s so there is a real nostalgic element to riding on it today. The SRAM 1x suits my riding style, minimal and durable. It’s a bike I plan to spend a lot more time on in the coming year. For now, the roundel takes pride of place on my denim jacket, alongside patches from previous editions. What does the roundel mean to you? Let me know in the comments. If you want to see the 5 rides that made up my #festive500 in 2018 there’s a link up here. http://bit.ly/2KZHxVa If you want to see more cycling videos hit the bell and subscribe, give me a thumbs up, and I’ll see you in the next video.
