Avoiding a Towline Tangled Mess - or - How to Add a Ratchet to Your Winch!

Throughout the past year I've come to enjoy flying towline free-flight gliders. While it has brought me great joy, I've also experienced the frustration of the tangled towline, which can come at you from a few directions. This film shows how to minimize the tangle that can happen when ur done reeling in the model and drop the winch to the ground. This natural motion often leads to the crank handle rotating in the opposite direction (called back-lash) which often lets out 10 to 20 circles of line around the spool, leading to a "bird's nest", a T.M. or a Tangled Mess. :-D You can try to be more careful, more aware, but hand the winch off to a friend or a youngster / newbie, and the crank handle often gets played with unknowingly in both directions...leading again to the TM. In a heartbeat, the intended joy of a towline flight is squashed...along with the immediate interest by those nearby, looking to see a great launch. Often the best resolve at that point is to cut the tangled line free, take your losses, then make a new hook & ribbon. All of this takes time, but not nearly as much time as trying to untangle a web of towline cord. If the air was a bit windy, I would suggest opening the ratchet, so that u can reel in, or let line out as needed. Then after the model releases, get into the routine or habit of turning the ratchet back into the lock position. My aim it to minimize this TM, and keep the action flowing. While it won't prevent tangles on the end of the line with the ribbon, or the occasional tangle on the winch's fair leads, at least one of the areas of TM will have less of an impact or occurrence. Thanks to my friends who brainstormed with me, leading to this brilliant ratchet and pawl solution. Filmed with a Canon SX20, and iPhones 11Pro & 14Pro. Music via ArtList.
