What is the Liberal World Order?

Around seventy-five years ago the Liberal World Order emerged from the aftermath of WWII. This liberal system, in the sense that it operates on rules that are - in theory - applied to each country equally, encourages each country to be democratic and to open its economy to the rest of the world. It gave rise to international institutions like the United Nations, The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The Liberal World Order was mainly championed by the United States, which served as a beacon of democratic power and economic success, and it was challenged briefly by the illiberal Soviet Union, during the Cold War. Since the late 2000s, the Liberal World Order has become weaker as it faces new challenges such as global democratic backsliding, territorial disputes, pandemics, and increasing destabilization from other countries, like China, building their own less-liberal regional orders. If the U.S. fails to address the challenges facing the Liberal World Order it will continue to weaken and the world will likely become less prosperous, less peaceful, less democratic once again.
