A Brief History Of Baijnath Temple

The historic Lord Shiva temple of Baijnath is in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Dedicated to Lord Vaidyanath or the Lord of the Physicians, which is another name of Lord Shiva, Baijnath temple was built more than 800 years ago. The stone-built temple is famous for its marvellous carvings and images of gods and goddesses in its walls. Baijnath temple was got built by two merchant brothers — Manyuka and Ahuka. According to Eminent archaeologist Vogel, who had studied the temple inscriptions in great detail, the Baijnath temple was built in 1204 AD. When the temple was built Baijnath was known by its oldest name of Kiragrama. Vogel writes in a report of the Archaeological Survey of India that at the time of the Baijnath temple’s construction, Kiragrama had been the seat of feudal chiefs, who had been loyal to the kings of Trigarta or Kangra kingdom, for at least eight generations. It is believed that Sansar Chand, one of the greatest kings of Kangra’s Katoch dynasty, had renovated and restored the Baijnath temple after taking control of the Kangra fort in 1786. According to Alexander Cunningham, the founder of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the temple was repaired by Ganga Ram, the family priest of Sansar Chand. In 1905, a catastrophic earthquake had caused great destruction in the entire Kangra valley and killed more than 20000 people. But surprisingly, Baijnath temple had survived the quake without much damage. It was nothing short of a miracle.
