We are at an inflection point in our efforts to fight poverty and inequities. Structural inequality undermines the promise of democracy to deliver for all. Around the world, people are hungry to be more engaged in the political process and for their elected officials to be more representative, competent and responsive to their needs. Reform champions across many governments are already taking steps in this direction. However, many barriers stand in the way of these allies for change working together. Governments can leverage public money as a powerful tool to engage their people and address inequality head on. To restore that vital relationship between governments and their people, we need more space for everyone to influence how public money is raised and spent – especially those who have been systematically excluded from accessing public goods and services. Their valuable insights can help governments make better decisions that reflect public priorities.
