VideoJoe is right in the middle of his ceiling fan installation project & now he's ready to install the ceiling junction box which, for this install, he will be installing what he calls a pancake box. The pancake box is only 1/2" thick so that's why they call it a pancake box because it's not very thick...like a pancake! This pancake box will be installed directly to the existing ceiling joist so once installed the pancake box will be flush with the drywall on the ceiling. He installs pancake boxes every once in a while especially if the ceiling joist/roof rafter is in the proper location. If the rafter or ceiling joist was not in line for where he wanted to install the ceiling fan then he would've cut out the drywall & installed a 2x4 then attached a different box up there for example. He would have to cut out the drywall since there is no attic above him but if there was an attic he would go up there & install his blocking (if needed) so he wouldn't have to patch a hole in the ceiling.
