This is another well-known Cantonese Opera by Yam Kim Fai 任剑辉 (Ren Jian Hui in Mandarin.) The female lead is top opera diva Fong Yim Fun 芳艳芬 (Fang Yan Fen in Mandarin。) The historical tale takes place during the warring period of China's three kingdoms. One of the political leaders, Cao Cao had taken back a prisoner by the name of Zhen Bu. Apparently, this merciless killer's sword was raised to kill her, but at that moment she turned around and her beauty so stunned him that he could not do so. His youngest son, Cao Zhi Jian, a well-known poet fell in love with this lovely widow staying at the palace grounds. Zhi Jian engaged a matchmaker to speak to the elder Cao. However, the matchmaker had other plans. He persuaded the elder Cao to let another son, Cao Bi marry the lovely Zhen Bu. His intention was to let his own daughter marry the famous poet of the Cao family. After the wedding, sibling rivalry became intense. Elder brother, with intention of killing the younger, challenged the poet to come up with a new poem within the time of walking seven steps. Zhi Jian came up with a poem about sibling rivalry, "Cooking the beans, using the stem as fuel. The beans are crying in the pot, "We come from the same roots, why are you dying to destroy me?" 「煮豆燃豆萁，豆在釜中泣，本是同根生，相煎何太急。」 The poem moved his brother to spare his life. Suspected of adultery, fair Zhen Bu took her own life to prove that while she loved the younger Cao, she was faithful to her husband. Cao Zhi Jian was so utterly devastated, he did not come up with any famous poems after her death, instead, he wasted his genius away, and imagined that Zhen Bu was a goddess and on dying returned to her life as a fairy!
