Bel-Air / Los Angeles Episode 138 Bel-Air was founded when Alphonzo Bell (a businessman / oil tycoon) bought 600 acres of land in west Los Angeles. After striking oil on their ranch at Santa Fe Springs, Bell entered the oil business with his father in the early 1920s, establishing the Bell Petroleum Co. and developing what became one of the richest oil fields in California. With the ensuing California oil boom, competition from less scrupulous oil companies was fierce—several of whom, along with William Randolph Hearst, tried to drive Bell's smaller operation out of business. This saga was documented in the fictionalized account by writer Upton Sinclair in the 1927 novel ‘Oil!’ (which was also the basis for the 2007 movie ‘There Will Be Blood’). Bel-Air encompasses more than 2,000 properties, with rough boundaries from Mulholland to the north, Sunset to the south, Beverly Glen Boulevard to the east, and Sepulveda Boulevard to the west.
