Crone's Omen

Based on the Russian Lullaby, "Bayu Bayushki", this piece has a dark and foreboding feel. The song begins with a solo clarinet playing the melody that is repeated throughout the song. It is then joined by a solo cello with woodwinds to fill out the theme. At 1:31 the string section, taiko drums and fluttering flutes carry the song forward with a driving, relentless beat, giving the solo cello an opportunity to swell passionately at 2:02. Finally, bassoon and bass clarinet are given centre stage at 2:43, providing a creeping theme that slowly builds until the end of the song.
