David Wengrow: we're talking about what's often called the broad sweep of human history right and our current picture of the broad sweep of human history was invented long before my discipline of archaeology even really existed let alone the discipline of anthropology. You can find it you can find the germ of it in things that were written over 200 years ago even over 300 years ago in the writings of philosophers like Thomas Hobbes in England jean-Jacques Crusoe in France who were what were called at the time state of nature theorists which means that they allowed themselves to speculate on what we were like what our species was like in its original form...
