High Speed Flight : Part 3 - Beyond the Speed of Sound

This film explores the aerodynamics of flight in the supersonic regime beyond Mach 1. It begins by detailing the characteristics of supersonic flows through normal and oblique shock waves, and in regions of expansion, using imagery from wind tunnel tests. These characteristics are further demonstrated by comparing the flow, and lift distribution, around typical super-sonic aerofoils such as the double-wedge and bi-convex cross sections. The impact of straight and swept back wings in supersonic flight is reviewed and the reasons for the choice of sweep angle demonstrated. The relative benefits of straight, swept and delta wings are also explored. Finally, some potential configurations for flight at high Mach number are illustrated. The film also includes footage of several, early high-speed aircraft including the English Electric Lightning, Dassault Mirage and Chance-Vought Crusader, as well as lesser known types. This is Part 3 of a trilogy of films that explore the aerodynamics of high-speed flight. Lasting for 19-minutes, it is a Shell Film Unit educational colour film, directed by Denis Segaller and photographed by Ronald Whitehouse, made in 1959.
