Hey everyone! In today's video, I'll be sharing my experiences with 5 and 10 gallon tanks. For those of you in a hurry, I think a 10 gallon tank will be the best option for most people, but 5 gallon tanks do have their place. Tank Size and Dimensions: So, let's start with tank size and dimensions. This can be a bit of a nightmare due to the different measurements used worldwide. For instance, US gallons are larger than imperial gallons, and most of the world uses liters. Here in Europe, we often see 12 and 8 US gallon tanks, which convert nicely to 30 and 45 liters. A 10 gallon tank is usually around twice the size of a 5 gallon tank, making it a better option for people with limited space. However, if you have restrictions from a landlord, a 5 gallon tank might be the way to go. Cost Comparison: Moving on to cost comparison, many think 10 gallon tanks are far more expensive than 5 gallon tanks, but that's not always true, especially in the US. For example, a 10 gallon Aqueon tank on Chewy is $46.99, while a 5 gallon Tetra tank on Amazon is $42.49. Outside the US, prices can be higher, but brands like Diversa offer good budget options without compromising quality. Remember to factor in the cost of accessories like lights, filters, and heaters when budgeting. Fish and Livestock Options: When it comes to stocking options, your tank goals are essential. Betta fish, guppies, endlers livebearers, and cherry shrimp are popular choices for a 5 gallon tank. However, larger tanks like a 10 gallon open up more options, such as neon tetras, chili rasboras, and pygmy corys. If space is limited and you're set on specific species like bettas or shrimp, a 5 gallon tank will suffice. Otherwise, a 10 gallon tank offers more flexibility and future-proofing. Maintenance and Care: Maintenance and care are crucial, and the time difference between maintaining a 5 and 10 gallon tank is minimal. Regular tasks include partial water changes, gravel vacuuming, trimming live plants, and removing algae. The maintenance level depends on your setup and choice of plants. For instance, slow-growing plants require less trimming, making this aspect a draw between both tank sizes. Water Quality and Stability: I've flip-flopped on water quality and stability. While larger volumes of water are generally easier to keep stable, a well-planted 5 gallon tank can maintain good water parameters. The key is to use a sufficiently rated filter and plenty of live plants. Both tank sizes are equally easy to cycle, but beginners might find a 10 gallon tank more forgiving. Filter Types and Efficiency: For filtration, most people stick with hang-on-back filters, sponge filters, or the Walstad method for these tank sizes. I prefer sponge filters or the Walstad method, as they provide effective and natural filtration. Internal filters can work but aren't my first choice for smaller tanks. Aesthetics and Aquascaping: When it comes to aesthetics and aquascaping, smaller tanks can be just as beautiful as larger ones. The cost of supplies like hardscape, aquasoil, and plants can be lower for smaller tanks. However, larger tanks offer more options for fitting larger pieces of rock and driftwood. Overall, this aspect is a draw between both tank sizes. Conclusion: In conclusion, 5 gallon tanks are great if you have limited space or landlord restrictions. However, I believe 10 or even 8 gallon tanks are generally better options. They offer more flexibility, and in the US, the price difference is minimal. For those outside the US, the higher cost might be worth it. Thanks for watching, and have a great day!
