「2023 Memorial Shower ㅣMemories, Showers, Seas] Exhibition TourㅣBANDAL Doc.

IM Heung-soon’s solo exhibition Memories, Showers, Seas 2023. 09. 16 - 11.12 Jeju4·3 Peace Memorial Hall, 2nd floor, Special Exhibition Gallery More than 2,000 articles that the late Ms. KIM Dong-il left behind, imbued with her life and the memories of the times, were taken out from the artist IM Heung-soon's storage six years after the Things That Do Us Part (2017-2018) exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA). First, as part of the Memorial Shower project—selected as one of the ARKO Public Art Projects (whose purpose is to question the social role of art)—two events, namely Grandmother×Grandmother: Halmang Yard Screening and Pop-Up Exhibition and the workshop series Gochigeula: Run with Me were held. On two quiet nights in Halmang Yard, the audience watched IM's video works on April 3 and contemplated the meaning of the work and April 3. Among KIM's mementos, more than 1,500 pieces of clothing were ironed and labeled piece by with care as if to soothe them. The organizers held a series of workshops to share KIM's belongings with many different people from Korea and Japan. All of these were done to share the memories infused in her clothes with the people in the present; it was as if everyone was honoring and performing a jesa ritual for all the KIM Dong-ils who lived through April 3. This was how the exhibition Memories, Showers, Seas began to set sail. "For Memories, Showers, Seas, IM already conducted workshops in Korea and Japan to revive and share the clothes and knitted items Ms. KIM left behind, infused with the memories of the deceased, with many different people. This way and culture of remembering invites us to share the memories seeped into the late KIM Dong-il's clothes, reconnect them, build our own narratives, and look into the reality we face." Having withstood a violent typhoon, they sail on a gentle breeze and glide across calm water. Even when a bigger storm strikes again without respite, they fight back desperately, trembling with fear. This is dignity. This is hope. Through the exhibition Memories, Showers, Seas, IM quietly unveils and connects the memories that have been hidden, concealed, ripped apart, scattered, and faded in the Special Exhibition Gallery and the lobby of the Jeju4·3 Peace Memorial Hall. The memories woven into KIM Dong-il's belongings pour out like the light and melt into the sea, with which the painful and complicated lives who were pushed around across national borders are intertwined. The artist turns the exhibition space into a sea of both isolation and connection, a sea of memories where the past meets the present, this place meets that place, life meets death, and all lives—not only humans but all living beings belonging to the ecological networks—meet each other in empathy, understanding, mourning, and commemoration. Can the sea, the origin of all lives, heal the pain and maintain the continuity of our lives? In what way will the sounds of memories from the past transform into sounds of life in the present and future? Unremembered history indicates that the future will repeat the past and that individuals will suffer the humiliation of repressed and insulted memories. In the end, by sharing KIM's mementos and remembering them, IM invites us to remember our histories interconnected across time and space, pay tribute to April 3, remember the individuals, and experience a new and special way of mourning that runs through the present and is open to the future. https://memorialshower.com/
