Israel's prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, announced that he was firing Gallant as 'trust had cracked'. Gallant and Netanyahu had differences over the conscription of ultra-orthodox Jews to Israel's army and how to retrieve Israel's hostages held by armed groups in Gaza. Although the Israeli prime minister said that he and Gallant had a “productive” ­relationship in the early months of the war against Hamas in Gaza, differences in strategy had developed between them. “At a time of war, full trust between the prime minister and the defence minister is critical,” Netanyahu said. “Unfortunately, this trust has eroded and attempts to bridge the gaps have failed.
