On a recent staycation in Waikiki with the family, I noticed how locals stay in Waikiki versus how tourists stay in Waikiki. There are definitely advantages to staying in Waikiki as a local, especially in what we pack and bring to the hotel. We also eat at differenty places generally and do different activities. It doesn't mean that locals "do" Waikiki better than tourists. I just noticed that we do it differently because we have access to it all the time.
