The Blackthorn Tree is an incredible tree it can grow to around 7 metres tall & live for 100 years! The older it gets the darker the bark goes until ultimately the tree becomes dark black earing it's name "Blackthorn" It's Latin name is prunus spinosa & it's apart of the Rosaceae making this tree related to the beautiful rose flower 🌹 🐝 Its one of the first tree's to bloom in spring making it a great source of nectar for bee's & butterfly's the Blackthorn supports all walks of wildlife throughout the year. 🌸 The flower blossoms are edible too being used to flavour things like syrups or decorating cakes they have a delicious almomdy flavour BUT moderation is key & you shouldn't consume too many no more than a tea spoon. 🍇After its flowers comes to sloe berries from around September to December famous for being made into sloe gin. These berries are rich in vitamin C The sloe berries are a bitter tonic, stimulating the metabolism and cleaning the blood. The leaves can be dried & used as a tea alternative or can even be used as a green dye. ☠️The Blackthorn can live up to the dark mythology & Folklore that surrounds the tree. If you get injured by the thorn of the Blackthorn you can get blackthorn poisoning. Blackthorn poisoning can cause severe infections , blood poisoning, swelling and joint pain. If left too long before treatment, even amputation might be the result.
