OC24_10_23_Andrew_Mummery_Weighing supermassive black holes with tidal disruption events

Unfortunate stars can occasionally be scattered onto near radial orbits about the supermassive black hole residing in a galactic centre. If the star gets sufficiently close that it enters its own tidal radius it can be torn apart, in its entering, by the tidal force of the SMBH, in an event known as a tidal disruption event. The subsequent accretion of the stellar debris power luminous transients, observable out to cosmological distances and across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. I will discuss how relativistic accretion models can be used to turn each tidal disruption event into a probe of the properties of the central black hole, and in particular its mass. This allows black hole mass measurements to be made in systems with systematically lower (M ~ 10^6 solar masses) black hole masses, which dominate the TDE rate. Finally, I will argue that TDEs will offer a novel probe of the physics of SMBH formation and evolution, particularly as we enter the eta of LSST.
