Since 1989, the Southern Pacific was operating trains over the old Denver & Rio Grande Western Moffat Tunnel Route, between Denver and the Dotsero Cutoff in Bond, Colorado. By 1994, a mix of Rio Grande and Southern Pacific motive power commanded these trains over the breathtaking Rocky Mountains and through the six-mile Moffat Tunnel under the Continental Divide. Passenger trains included the classic Rio Grande Ski Train to Winter Park and Amtrak's California Zephyr.
