Recorded on a piano roll in 1915. Ferruccio Busoni (1866 – 1924) was an Italian pianist, composer, writer, and teacher. He studied in Vienna and toured as a pianist in Europe and in the US. In his early years, he composed in a late Romantic style. After publishing his ‘Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music’ in 1907, he developed a more individual style, with elements of atonality. His interest in Native American tribal melodies is reflected in some of his works, such as the Indian Fantasy for piano and orchestra. His compositions include piano works, chamber music, orchestral works, and operas. However, he is arguably best known for his piano transcriptions of music by JS Bach, published as the Bach-Busoni Editions.
