"Lost Forever in this Dream of a Floating World"・Kasane EXPLAINED (1823)

The dance-drama Kasane, also known by its formal title Iro Moyō Chotto Karimame, was part of Tsuruya Nanboku IV's drama Kesakake Matsu Narita no Riken, first performed in 1823 by the actors Ichikawa Danjūrō VII and Onoe Kikugorō III. Special thanks to Mark Oshima for his translation of Kasane in the book "Kabuki Plays on Stage Vol 3: Darkness and Desire", which is borrowed here to illustrate a few of the scene. In addition to the music of Kasane, I've used some parts of another Kiyomoto piece, Yudachi, as I could not find a complete audio recording of the former. Most of the performance seen was recorded in March 1982 at the Kabuki-za, with Bandō Tamasaburō V as Kasane and Kataoka Nizaemon XV (then Kataoka Takao) as Yoemon.
