How to Build a Pole Barn Shop - Part 4 - Building Layout with Batter Boards and String

This video describes how I used batter boards and string to layout and square up the pole barn before we augered the holes and set the poles. Batter boards are 2x4s or scrap pallet wood screwed together to form an "L" at each corner of the building. They are set back far enough to allow room to dig the holes for the corner posts. Once the batter boards are set, stretch out the first string to represent one side of the barn. A parallel string can be set for the opposite side of the barn. Stretch a perpendicular string to the first two parallel strings. This string should be set as close to square as possible. The 3-4-5 triangle method can be used to check square. This refers to a triangle where one side is 3 ft, the other side is 4 ft, with the resultant hypotenuse being equal to 5 feet if the corner is square. After this string is set, the last string which is parallel to the one that was just squared up is set. When all these strings are set, pull a long tape measure from each set of diagonal corners. If these measurements are equal than the layout is square. If not, adjust each corner until it is, making sure to move the opposite string the same distance to keep the building dimensions correct.
