Salt and Plow Extra on the Green Mountain Railroad

On February 20, 2014, Vermont Rail System ran an extra 263 train over the Green Mountain Railroad consisting of loads of road salt for the shed at Riverside Yard in Bellows Falls along with a few general freight on the tail. Power for the train was GMTX GP38-2 2189, VTR GP38-2 201, VTR GP40-2W 310 and LLPX GP38-2 2334, or two Union Pacific painted leasers bracketing two red Vermont Railway units. Upon arrival at Riverside, the 201 would be dropped for use by the Bellows Falls switcher and the power would run light down to the North Walpole shops to tie onto VTR GP40-3 (in worn HLCX paint) and 101-year old plow VTR X-20 for the return to Rutland. I matched up with the Salt Extra at Ludlow, arriving only minutes before the train did, then chased east shooting at Cavendish Road and Bailey's Mills in Gassetts, Chester depot, and the newly-rebuilt Bartonsville covered bridge. After the power tied onto the plow at North Walpole, we watch as the extra departs for Rutland crossing over the impressive stone arch bridge from New Hampshire into Vermont, then skirts the bank of the Connecticut River after crossing the NECR diamond. At Brockway's Mills the plow extra rounds the corner and crosses over a deep gorge, then passes under an overpass in Bartonsville with both blades out. After passing Chester depot the over-powered train heads through Bailey's Mills followed by Proctorsville as daylight slowly begins to fade away. Our final shot is at Ludlow as the plow passes the former Rutland depot, partially blocked by a huge pile of snow. Thanks for watching! (C) 2014 Mainline Productions
