As a farmer and engineer, I understand that our profit margin in farming is very slim. Most backyard and medium-scale breeders could not afford to hire the services of an engineer. Typhoon Odette was really an eye-opener last year. Most goat farms in the Visayas regions were partially, if not totally destroyed. Our farm, Terra Grande Farms, located in a mountainous barangay in San Carlos City, Neg. Occidental, has survived the havoc of typhoon Odette, with only a minor roof damage (natumbahan ug lubi). Upon investigating the photos/videos of several damaged farms, I noticed similar weaknesses – lack of roof cross-bracings, diagonal bracings for both weak and strong directions and proper notching for wooden connections. Cross-bracings are very important for large wooden structures due to torsional forces caused by the wind. If provided, these would have saved most structures, with only a very low additional cost. Our roof cross-bracings only costs around P2000 total for the 8mm bars, turnbuckles and c-clamps. We are sharing our goat house design plans and detailed estimate to fellow farmers.
