THE KINGDOM OF INTIMACY | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (September 8, 2024) Today is the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time; and the gospel proclaims the miraculous healing of a deaf man who also had a speech impediment. The healing of the man confirms Jesus’ mission to the Gentiles. But Saint Mark also directs our attention to the means through which the healing comes about. Jesus puts his finger into the man’s ears and touches his tongue with spittle. Then he looks up to heaven, groans, and says: “Ephphatha!” “Be opened!” The Lord uses physical means like his spittle and the intimate action of touching and imbues them with his powerful Word. We see here the dynamics of our sacramental life.
