INDIA: NEW DELHI: NEW MODELLING SCHOOL

(14 Mar 1995) English/Nat With the reigning Miss World hailing from India, the concept of feminine beauty is now being reassessed in that country. Barbizon, a US modelling school, has set up shop in New Delhi. Now Indian women are learning how to strut on the catwalk in true super-model style. A few years ago this would have been unthinkable : young Indian women are now attending a school in New Delhi that teaches them how to be fashion models. US company Barbizon have opened their first modelling school in India. Their aim is to give women the poise and presence to work as professional models. The instructors are keen to promote a mixture of western ideals with traditional concepts of Indian beauty. They want to ensure that their students preserve the Indian ideals of beauty. The school expected some opposition. Barbizon has had to deal with a culture where it is considered unbecoming to flaunt feminine sexuality. But the classes are already full and they are not taking any more applicants. SOUNDBITE: "India's a point in time right now that there are so many changes happening because of the liberalisation of the economy. And because of several of what I'll call lucky coincidences like the Miss World and Miss Universe contest, that India is in the forefront in the political and the economic world. India women are in the forefront in the fashion world. So it seems like its a perfect time for a concept like Barbizon." SUPER CAPTION: Lisa Tratcher, Managing Director, Barbizon Until recently, even film stars rarely exposed more than a bare forearm on the screen. But, due to the influence of western media and international television, things are changing. SOUNDBITE: "I know people will say that India society does not quite accept modelling and all its connotations. It is a western concept. It is a breaking away from tradition. And it is something a father would probably frown upon. But it is also being viewed in a context that is very different from what was being seen maybe ten, fifteen years ago, modelling was frowned upon. Today it is considered just another career. Within limits, everything is allowed." SUPER CAPTION: Sathya Saran, Editor, Femina magazine With the glitz and glamour of the western world gaining ground in the culture, Indian women will never look the same.
