Neil P. Doherty | Irish translator and champion of Turkish poetry

This week on Pop & Politics we are joined by translator Neil P. Doherty. Born in Dublin and raised in the small Irish town of Kildare, since 1995 Doherty has been residing in Istanbul. To date, he has translated a wide range of Turkish poets and his translations have appeared in various international journals. In conversation with Kenan Behzat Sharpe, Doherty discusses the rich tradition of Turkish poetry and the biases of the publishing industry that causes it to remain under-recognized internationally. He also describes the challenges and rewards of translating Turkish literature into English. A lecturer at Bilgi University in Istanbul where he teaches academic skills to first year students of Psychology, in 2015 Doherty was invited to take part in the International Workshop for Translators of Turkish Literature on the island of Cunda where he worked on the poetry of Behçet Necatigil. In 2017 he was a co-editor of Turkish Poetry Today, which was published by Red Hand Books in the UK. He has recently finished translating a prose work by the leading Turkish writer Enis Batur.
