As a foundation species, the health of Salmon is crucial to the health and function of ecosystems throughout our entire bioregion, from the oceans and up these rivers, to the forests that surround us. While we tend to take nature’s little miracles like this for granted, it’s important to remember how fragile it all really is...and that it hasn’t always been this way. Over the past 100 years, us humans have done some pretty silly things that accidentally ended up damaging these very rivers that these salmon need to survive, putting them in the precarious position of being in danger of going extinct...and if they do, these ecosystems that all depend on them, that we all live in, will collapse. As humans, our actions are always coming from a place limited by the knowledge we have at that current moment in time, and we’re constantly in the process of learning from our mistakes to do better moving forward. Redd Fish Restoration Society is a non-profit organisation on the west coast of Vancouver Island that strives for the conservation of wild fish through habitat restoration, research and monitoring - using the science, knowledge and technology of today to help undo damage done in the past. Join me in exploring all that watershed restoration entails from the hillsides way up on those peaks, to the forested plains below, and into the creeks and rivers that these gorgeous littler critters call home - all for the love of Wild Salmon!
