Trying out the new ‪@SONICWARE‬ SmplTrek in a 172 BPM drum&bass tune early Techstep style. All the synths sounds were sampled from the Modal Craft which went through the Oto Boum to give a bit of distortion and warmth to the otherwise rather thin sounding synth. I also resampled some of them using a combination of insert and master effects of the SmplTrek. The break was a sample from my collection, while the drum comes out of the House Kit included in the library resampled after applying the multiband compressor of the machine. I also used a midi track to sequence the synth. at the end of the jam i used it to play it live... until the craft decided to crash ... for the record the sound was being effected both from the Boum and a chorus from the SmplTrek. My first impressions and feedback on the SmplTrek: Overall I'm positively impressed by the machine although i think it is more for sketching ideas and starting tunes rather than an hardware alternative to a DAW. PROs: fun to use portable Rather easy to use. It took me only a couple of hours to understand the workflow, the manual is straight to the point and the UX is quite consistent across track types. easy to (re)sample from several sources I'm rather surprised by how easy is to be used in combination with a smartphone: the out was recorded by connecting my device to it via USB. it also works seamlessly if you want to record from the telephone. CONs: the possibility to manipulate the sound and the samples is rather limited. i would appreciate a way to automate the EQ and effect settings but i guess the machine is not capable to handle that.
