Billions of your cells divide every day. One of the proteins that has a crucial role in cell division is called Ki-67. Like a coat, this protein wraps around the chromosomes and forms a barrier of small brush-like structures. First author Sarah Cuylen explains how its surface-active ability ensures that the chromosomes do not clump together, but slide past each other and spread out properly. Published in Nature in 2016, it was the first time that scientists could visualize that cell proteins can also act as surfactants.
