How is it possible that one and the same person can memorize a 1,000 digit number and the order of 10 decks of cards within an hour but forget his keys or leave the money he withdrew in the cash point? For Ed Cooke, Grandmaster of Memory, the answer lies in the creative connections one can make between a set of numbers or the order of cards and anything that may pop up in our mind, be it a colour, a banana or even Frank Zappa. Memory is the art of imagination, says Cooke, and makes a case for how cats can inform our memory skills. EdCooke At the age of 23, Ed Cooke became Grandmaster of Memory, which means that he can learn a 1000 digit number and the order of 10 decks of cards within an hour. He uses memory techniques which involve turning raw data into colourful imagery. Cooke, along with Princeton neuroscientist Greg Detre, is the co-founder of "Memrise", a free online educational platform using memory techniques and creativity to optimise learning. In 2010, "Memrise" was one of the winners of the London Mini-Seedcamp and a finalist for the 2010 TechCrunch Europas Start-up of the Year. In 2011, it was selected as one of the best Techstars Boston startups. Ed studied Psychology and Philosophy at Oxford University and received a Master's degree in Cognitive Science from Paris Descartes University. He has authored the book "Remember, Remember: Learn the Stuff You Thought You Never Could". His latest writings can be found on his blog and on Twitter.
