A review of the Amstrad NC100 Notepad

A thorough review of one of the last Z80-based portable computers, the Amstrad NC100. This was released in 1992, built in the same form factor as the TRS-80 Model 100, Tandy WP-2, Laser PC-5, and Cambridge Z88. Like the Z88, it is expandable, has a built-in software suite, and runs on a Z80, but it also has a true PC Card slot and the ability to run CP/M. Features included a 4 MHz Z80 processor, 64K of RAM, 256K of ROM, which included several built-in apps (serial terminal, BBC Basic interpreter, Protext word processor, four-function calculator, diary/address book/time manager). Successors included the French/Italian NC150 and the NC200, which had a larger, backlit LCD, 128K of RAM, and a 720K floppy drive. The US/Canada equivalent of the NC100 was the NTS Dreamwriter 225. This review covers both hardware and software features of the machine, with a special focus on the built-in BBC Basic interpreter. I display and test four programs listed in the manual towards the end of the video. Future videos will 1) show the NC100 connecting to the r/retrobattlestations Level 29 BBS and 2) demonstrate the use of CP/M (ZCN) on the machine. Recorded with my Nikon D3100 DSLR.
