Every horse owner knows that the bond between a horse and its human can be as deep and complex as any friendship. But according to Elke Hartmann, a dedicated horse welfare researcher at SLU in Uppsala, there’s a science to this relationship that can significantly impact the welfare of our equine companions. Elke Hartmann's passion for horses is evident: “I moved to Sweden some 16 years ago and started doing a PhD on group housing of horses. And since then I got stuck with horses I have been studying for the last 15 years,” she shares. Her work revolves around everything from horse welfare to the difficulties of the horse-human relationship. But what stands out is her commitment to translating research into real-world applications for ordinary horse owners. Hartmann believes that understanding a horse's emotional state is vital. She explains, “I focused on doing my recent projects on finding indicators to assess the emotional state of horses, to be able to specifically understand how horses express anticipation.” This isn’t just academic curiosity; it's about enhancing the lives of horses by tuning into their feelings. By assessing a horse's anticipation, owners can reassess their actions to promote more positive experiences for the horse.
