Backlighting is at the heart of how TVs work. ............................................................................... TVs work by allowing a filter system on the back of the display to generate the image seen on the screen. However, if the "backlight" is damaged or stops working, the owner may be left with a very expensive paperweight. No need to buy a new TV, just a few steps to replace the backlight. Step 1 Remove all screws on the back of theTV. The number of screws will vary by model, however, the screws are usually located around the edge of the rear case. Gently lift the rear panel away from the monitor and remove any metal pieces underneath to expose the TV's internal components. Step 2 Locate and remove the backlight from the LCD. The backlight will be a slender tube in a clear plastic case. In a well-ventilated area, use a dremel tool to carefully cut into the end of the plastic housing closest to the end where the tube lead connector enters the plastic housing. Step 3 Use a hair dryer to heat the area where the tube wires go into the plastic casing. Once the glue holding the wires in place is hot enough, carefully pull out the wires and tubes. Use extreme care when handling backlight tubes, as the presence of mercury vapor can pose a health risk if the tubes are damaged. Make sure to perform this step in a well-ventilated area. Step 4 Unscrew the reflective strip and reinstall the new backlight just like the old backlight you removed in step 3.
