Today we travel back in time as we head down the Ohio River to Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. We visit the famous, historic Rabbit Hash General Store and learn a bit more about the only down in the country to truly go to the dogs! Rabbit Hash has had a dog serving as mayor since 1988! According to the Rabbit Hash General Store website, The town's name, "Rabbit Hash" is said to have originated during the flood of 1847 when the abundant local rabbit population was driven to higher ground and became a food staple in a special stew called "hash." Little documented history of Rabbit Hash actually survives, primarily because devastating Ohio River floods in 1884, 1913 and 1937 deluged the little town and ruined many records. The Rabbit Hash General Store was completely submerged during the 1937 flood that crested at an unheard of 79.9 feet. There is still mud in the store's attic crawl space from the historic 1937 flood, and the only reason it has survived the river's often angry waters is that it is anchored securely to the ground by a series of iron rods which run through the entire structure. Much of the rest of Rabbit Hash was not so fortunate during the historic flood. Several residences, outbuildings, the creamery, a tobacco warehouse and the blacksmith shop were washed away in 1937. The hamlet's most notable building, the Rabbit Hash General Store (c. 1831), was regarded as "the best known and best preserved country store in Kentucky". The store was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 2, 1989. On February 13, 2016, the famous General Store was destroyed by a fire, and recent mayoral elections also act as a fundraiser to restore it and fund the Historical Society. It was restored and reopened on April 1, 2017, using a combination of original material and donor lumber from other period correct structures around the area, thereby allowing the store to maintain its historic designation. The Rabbit Hash Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 4, 2003. What really sets Rabbit Hash apart may be their choice of government. Since 1988, Rabbit Hash has selected a canine governor as a fundraiser for the Rabbit Hash Historical Society. The nonprofit organization ensures the preservation and upkeep of the historic town. The election takes place every four years in November to coincide with the presidential election. Wilbur is the fifth dog mayor of Rabbit Hash. He beat out incumbent mayor Brynn, a pit bull. Former May Lucy Lou even considered a presidential run!
